Farm Report
Help Wanted
We're nearing the end of another great
season.

Yet, there's still alot of work to do. For
starters, I need to gather up, clean,
and store all of our irrigation
equipment. Next, I’ll clean, repair and
store our harvest and packing
materials. Of course, hand tools need
to be sharpened. I’ll change the oil and
clean the filters in the machines and
also complete general maintenance.
By November, I’ll finish preparing the fields for winter planting. Yes, we
plant for the winter! This winter, I’m planting a mix of winter rye and
red clover as a cover crop for the earth. You see, if the soil is left
exposed to the sun and wind over the harsh winter, it will quickly
degrade and erode. As one of our most important resources on the
farm, the soil needs protection. Cover crops accomplish this task by
using their roots to hold soil in place and provide some shelter from
the glaring sun and windy winds. As a further benefit, these plants will
decompose in the spring adding rich, organic matter to the soil in
anticipation of next year’s crops.

I'm not currently accepting CSA members for the 2009 but stay tuned
to the website for more information about next year. Of course, if you
have questions just send me an email or go to our contact page and
I'll get back to you.

In the meantime, be sure to visit your favorite farmer's market and
stock up on the abundance of local food. There are lots of great
resources out there for canning, freezing, drying, and storing nature's
bounty for the winter ahead.

Thanks for a great year!
