My favorite part of farming is growing all of the different colors and shapes of vegetables. At the farmers market, it always brings a smile to my face when someone sees something they’ve never seen before. Of all the colors I see, there is one that stands out. I’m talking about the Black Spanish radish. You should give this one a try.

This past week, Christina and I attended the organic farming conference put on by the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Service (I know…it’s a mouthful). Continuing education is one thing that good farmers do during the winter and this is a wonderful opportunity. Held in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, the farming conference covers a wide range of topics. Each year, I pick out three areas to work on.

Our farm has seen quite a few changes over the years, that’s for sure.

We started farming in 2006 (seems like just yesterday!) on a small, 1 acre patch of weedy ground in Marseilles, Illinois. That year was, ahem, interesting. We started our CSA program with the wonderful folks over at Shedd Aquarium. Their enthusiasm was remarkable. Wind is one of Mother Nature’s most powerful forces and it certainly impacts the farm. This week marks an important turning point for our year. It is the final week of our fall CSA and that means our year is winding down.
